Magic

Many types of magic exist in literature, especially in young adult fantasy fiction. Telekinesis, conjuration, and psychic awareness are merely a few. Magic is always fun to read because it takes us away from the mundane, seemingly magicless world we live in: reality. To read such books and short stories the reader must suspend her or his beliefs in order to make it real.  I enjoy reading books with magic like Le Morte d’Arthur by Sir Thomas Mallory, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien, and the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling.

In my Satchel & Sword trilogy , the magic that is utilized is called Mythics. I combined the word myth, a person or thing having an imaginary or unverifiable existence (www.merriam-webster.com), with physics, a science that deals with matter and energy and their interactions (www.merriam-webster.com). Nevaline’s teacher, Master Sjhong, is one of the prime masters at wielding the art of Mythics in the trilogy. He can levitate himself, lift heavy objects with his mind, and make potions with healing properties. These are all abilities that move beyond matter and energy into the imaginary and fantastical world of Satchel & Sword!

Curiously, those plants [desert plants such as cacti and woody shrubs] not native to Amazonia, valiantly grew there within the more chilled temperatures and amidst the prominence of rainfall. Her mind boggled at this. Also, fireflies fluttered around the garden, another occurrence which befuddled her, for fireflies, as she had read in herbalist class, existed predominantly in marshlands, lands very far away from the camp. Well, it was Master Sjhong who tended to this garden. –Satchel & Sword I. The Search for the Saluka Stone.

But, I believe that there is magic that happens in our lives, magic that happens every day. We just do not notice. Maybe we avoid a car accident by stopping in the nick of time, just mere centimeters away from the other car. Maybe we get a good grade on an exam or essay which we highly doubted. Maybe we find that we have progressed a big step further in achieving our dream career, a step never before thought possible. Whether we attribute these happenings to a higher religious power or to fate, that is a personal decision.

What kind of magic do you find in your own life?

Magic is everything, love is the most important magic of all!The magic I find in my own life is everything that is beautiful, my daughter growing up, my husband smile, my garden, life in general is magic if you know how to live! Magic is in all of us if we want to see it, we will!

I believe life itself is magical. I believe the greatest magic of all is the soul that defines every one of us. The fact that we exist at all is a miracle. I don’t believe anything control’s our destiny…the magic is that we have been given life and with that life the opportunity to determine our own destiny.
