Caught Off Guard

We have all had moments when a situation we expect to happen one way happens in a totally different way- sometimes good, and sometimes bad. It is especially challenging when that situation catches us off of our guard and we are powerless to defend ourselves at the moment. That is what happened to me in law school. I had had scholastic success in high school and in college and enjoyed the process of researching a subject, choosing what information to use, and formulating that information into a product- the essay. I naively expected law school to be the same process. But, lack of preparation was not my problem. I felt an overwhelming mental block. I had moved away from my friends and was failing at the career that I had set myself up for since I was a child. Law school taught me a lot. I learned that a person must choose a career that best fits their talents and interests and does not isolate themselves from friends and loved ones. I was caught off guard and knew not how to defend myself. Life teaches us to prepare ourselves. As the saying goes: “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.” Hence, if we are presented with situations similar to past, failed situations, we can now deal with such obstacles and move on happily forward.

“Crows kawing…leaves rustling… hammers and mace! The man in black! Her mind immediately felt betrayed of faculty. Her eyelids grew heavy. NAE! She forced her eyelids open, at least halfway. The air escaped from her lungs. She pressed her hand against her chest as her heart slowed its beat. From behind a tree, the young man walked towards her. She could not fight back. His presence bound her sense in more ways than one.” –Satchel & Sword I: The Search for the Saluka Stone.
