Desert Badlands in a Post-Apocalyptic world and the teenaged female who must fight in it. A review of Blood Red Road by Moira Young. (****Contains Spoilers)

To attempt to figure out a woman, more specifically the teenaged woman, is a feat in itself. For there are many dimensions to one who is at the last of their childhood years and at the beginning of their adult years… some would say there are even more dimensions to a teenaged person of the female kind. In this book, the main character, Saba, is an 18 1/2 year old young woman living in a post-apocalyptic world. The Sandsea, barren landscapes, sandstorms, and towns with no laws, all play well in the emotional turmoil that Saba feels when her brother, Lugh, is kidnapped by four cloaked horse-men.

She is physically and emotionally tested when she is forced to fight in various brawling matches after she and her little sister, Emmi, are kidnapped. She must protect Emmi and, at the same time, keep herself alive in a world of anarchy.

The story moves along at a fast pace, which I like. I suffer from Fickle Fan Syndrome: if the story in a book, movie, or TV show, falls short in action or suspense, I immediately move on. I definitely stayed with this book through to the end.

At times, Saba can have a rough personality. Often, we see her chastising Emmi, harshly. Though, she does find herself pitying Emmi because Emmi is very young and rebellious, like her, and Saba understands that she and their brother are the only family Emmi has left. The reader also sees Saba soften her character when she meets Jack, a fighter on the young men’s side. Jack, a young man with a mysterious, questionable past, is also a character who takes time to grow on the reader.

The prose captures the imagination. I found the American Southern-type accent to be refreshing in the way a book is written. Many would critique the prose style as hard-to-read. But, once the reader gets a feel for the prose, she/he becomes immersed into Saba’s world.

The reader follows Saba as she matures in her fight for survival in severe situations. The remaining books in the series will more than likely have plenty of plot to offer. All in all, the book is a great read and a great addition to the Young Adult genre.
